Tasmanian employers can cover their workers by either purchasing a policy of workers compensation from a licensed insurer or by becoming a self-insurer.
WorkCover Tasmania will consider, on merit, applications from employers to become a self-insurer permit holder. Self-insurance increases ownership by employers of the need to provide a safe working environment and ensure the best possible management of claims for those injured at work.
The Board may grant a permit to an employer to self-insure where the employer is able to satisfy certain specified criteria. The Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 provides legislative provisions in relation to self-insurers and you should refer to this before deciding to proceed with your application.
