Injury Management Coordinator Training Requirements

The WorkCover Tasmania Board has approved a set of training competencies associated with the role of the Injury Management Coordinator (IMC).

The training requires satisfactory completion of nine units of competency (as outlined in the document below – Role of Injury Management Coordinator) recognised within the Australian Qualifications Framework.

The model has been amended to reflect the training requirements associated with the role of the IMC and an updated version is available (Version 3 – August 2008).

It is envisaged that the role and functions of the IMC will be reflected in the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 and that training requirements will be mandated to ensure that only persons with the appropriate competencies will be able to undertake the role.  These legislative amendments are expected to occur later this year.

A number of training providers have expressed an interest in delivering IMC training and are currently working on developing training packages with a view to rolling out training in the coming months.  A register of these providers and their contact details is provided below.

What is an Injury Management Coordinator?

An Injury Management Coordinator will be someone typically appointed by the insurer; however larger employers are also encouraged to consider the benefits of appointing an IMC within their organisation.  The role of the Injury Management Coordinator is to coordinate and oversee the entire injury management process, including medical treatment, rehabilitation and return to work.  To perform the role of an Injury Management Coordinator, the person must satisfactorily complete the units of competency approved by the WorkCover Tasmania Board.
